Updating system configuration please wait
I've been experiencing a rather odd phenomenom lately with my Win98SE system.
It seems like the FIRST time I boot up each day it'll give me the "Windows is updating its configuration, this may take a few minutes..." message (in text mode, before the GUI loads but after has been processed) as if I had installed a new program or made some significant change, although I had NOT installed or changed any such setting.
For Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0 SP3 or later, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, an additional rule is available: For keys 3 and 4, the value name can be prefixed with an asterisk to force the program to run even in Safe mode.
Keys 1 through 4 are run each time a new user logs in.
What this means is that sometimes we install a new device, or change critical aspects of an existing device, in Windows, but we fail to remember that sometimes changes in BIOS are needed.
First of all, make sure a version name is displayed under the Download and Play button.
Thanks much, AP9 Haven't yet found the answer to your question, but since in general your problem can be called a Windows startup problem, perhaps this Microsoft Knowledge Base article will be of help: (Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems)
scid=kb; EN-US;q188867&GSSNB=1 Configuration updates that appear to continue after the first successful configuration change seems odd, but is often due to the fact that those changes were meant for both Windows and BIOS and NOT Windows alone.
It may be that the behavior you observe is because of one of the "Run Once" keys in the registry, which was not properly cleaned up the last time some software/hardware was installed or uninstalled. You can take a look at your Registry using the registry editor (type Regedit in the Run dialog box off the Start Menu) and see if this is the case: Definition of the Run Once Keys in the Registry (Q137367) ------------------------------ The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Windows 95 Microsoft Windows 98 Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0 Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 Microsoft Windows 2000 , Advanced Server Microsoft Windows 2000 , Server Microsoft Windows 2000 , Professional --------------------------sion\ Run Once\Setup MORE INFORMATION Keys 1 through 7 apply to Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

Those files, 5 by default, are in C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP and are named rb001 and so on. Delete those and use the properties option to determine age of others.
